How much longer can this go on?
Yet again, a lack of contacts and knowledge of this level of football is being shown up. We have a manager who constantly re-signs players who are patently not good enough for the level we play at, "forgiving" how they have treated the club while playing for them and after leaving.
Spriggs - signed three times because of a lack of other options, and couldn't cut it at the level we now play at when he went to Boston for 45 minutes.
Quigley - not good enough for this level, out of his depth, let the club down time and time again previously, made foul comments about the club and manager after leaving, yet here we go, cap in hand, to sign him again. Have we also bought him a new Satnav?
Why do we sign these players? Because we have a manager with no contacts to sign anyone else. We signed Quigley after "we were let down by another target". Does this mean we were only talking to ONE player at a time? Why are we not talking to several at a time for each position to give us a pool to choose from? This is why we end up signing players in a panic that are not good enough to play at our level.
I firmly believe, when you get to this level, you need a manager who is tactically aware, able to change things, has coaching badges, is able to pick up a phone to a number of surrounding league clubs - Norwich, Peterborough, Cambridge, Luton, Ipswich, ALL of these are closer than Quigley lives to King's Lynn! I would suggest they have a number of players who want competitive football.
4-5-1 at home, constantly?? Potentially, we HAD the best goalscorers in the league in Sands, Mettam, Stevenson, yet Sands has become a scapegoat for the early season form. Which end of the pitch does he play at?? Our opening game changed when he came on against Merthyr. Also, why are we playing 4-5-1 when we have no wide players?
He has been released because he was not fit. He only came back from holiday two weeks after everyone else and has had two games (Greg Smith the same). If either was a certain (very overweight and unfit) number 9 who was born in Lynn, would this have been the case? He was allowed two seasons of huffing and puffing at step 5 and nothing was done - sticking two fingers up at the club by losing two stone after he left - some folk hero!! Both Smith and Sands would have got goals had they been allowed to get fit.
We have Mettam up front on his own, small for a forward, and will get goals, although this will not happen with him playing up front on his own - he is not a lone striker. That said, no striker will get service when we constantly sign central midfielders and no wingers! His frustration is obvious as he has spent every game I have seen throwing his arms in the air due to lack of service.
We constantly play players out of position and expect them to do well (ever since we reformed), Mulready constantly on the left (would have got goals as a forward with a good striking partner), Hilliard constantly on the right (he is a striker), Edge on the bench and getting five minutes at a time - why make him part of the first team squad if he is not getting game time? He may as well play week in, week out in the reserves and get games. Central midfielders on the wing (Hurst). Ryan Fryatt at right back. These are just off the top of my head. When we make substitutions, they are like-for-like, no change of style or formation. We have let Liam Hurst go and replaced him with Quigley. Why?? We have let Kern Miller go and not replaced him - why?? He was our best defender last season by a country mile. We are signing players who "will only join if Miller is not here" - why?? We have no wingers, no natural right back, a glut of central midfielders and forwards playing out of position - why?? Why are we not signing players for a style of football rather than shoehorning players into positions they are unfamiliar with? We have not had a decent recruitment policy since Kevin Boon left.
Time to stop signing drinking buddies, "good lads", golfing buddies and egos. We need a manager who has managed at a higher level and has the contacts, qualifications and tactical awareness to change and improve things. We need someone that can pick up a phone to someone other than the players in his contact list. We need a manager who doesn't just sign players by reputation and is going to watch these people and ensuring they fit into the way we want to play. It is a cliché, but we "have been taken as far as we can" under the current boss. Unfortunately, he relied on Buster's naivety of the football world and was able to gain extra seasons and time by "next season being different", the last of which being the fact we moved south. Still no change!
No need for clever football at this level. As Mike Bassett said, 4-4-F*~%*^NG-2 is all we need. But, for this we need wingers and to have two forwards who will get goals - we have these forwards, but they will not get goals the way we play at the minute and with no wingers.
King's Lynn are a big club with amazing facilities for the level we play at, and we need a manager who can take us forward. A manager who has managed at a higher level. If we make ONE full time appointment at the club, surely this should be the one? Forget players on contract at this level, they are without great value. Let's sign a decent manager who can take us forward and employ him full time, which is the only way to get a manager of the calibre we require.
